Stars shoot into Florida to battle the Panthers

03/01/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Dallas Stars will conclude a brief excursion through the Sunshine State this evening, when the Pacific Division contenders visit the BankAtlantic Center to face the Florida Panthers.

Dallas began the trip on a very good note, as the club came through with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Southeast Division-leading Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. Ladislav Nagy scored off a Mike Ribeiro feed 1:35 into the extra period to give the Stars their third consecutive win.

Jere Lehtinen had the regulation goal for Dallas, which moved to within five points of first-place Anaheim in the Pacific standings, while Marty Turco stopped 19-of-20 shots.

The Stars currently hold the No. 5 playoff spot in the Western Conference, with rival San Jose lurking one point behind in sixth.

Dallas made a move towards improving its postseason chances on Tuesday, acquiring veteran defenseman Mattias Norstrom from Los Angeles just prior to the trade deadline. The 35-year-old Swede, a two-time All-Star who had served as the Kings' captain since 2002, is expected to make his Stars' debut tonight.

The Stars will be aiming for their first four-game win streak since they ripped off five consecutive victories to begin this season.

Florida stands far out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference but comes into tonight's matchup on a roll of its own. On Tuesday, the Panthers recorded their second straight triumph by edging Washington, 6-5, in a shootout.

Jozef Stumpel and Ville Peltonen each scored during the deciding phase for Florida, while Olli Jokinen notched his third hat trick of the season. Stephen Weiss and Juraj Kolnik also had regulation goals in the victory.

Ed Belfour made 28 saves over the first 65 minutes and stopped both Washington skaters he faced in the shootout for the Panthers, who were coming off a 7-2 rout of Boston on Saturday.

This evening's showdown marks the first game for the Stars in the BankAtlantic Center since dropping a 1-0 decision to the Panthers on December 19, 2003. Dallas won the only meeting between the clubs last season, a 4-3 decision at the American Airlines Center.

The teams have split the last six overall encounters.
